The American Lawyer reports that, according to a survey of over 6,000 respondents, the morale of midlevel associates is at its lowest level in five years.
Anxiety about uncertain job security and firm cutbacks are undoubtedly at the source of this associate community depression. The cutbacks and cost-saving measures are inevitable in this weakened economic environment. However, it stands to reason that unhappy associates will make for less productive associates. The article points out that firms that were candid about finances and layoffs and were perceived as putting their associates' welfare first benefitted in the rankings.
